Thick Weave Blanket

Regular price Sale price R 2,499.00 Sale

Cosy up with the comfort of a warm, handwoven layer that’s well-equipped to keep the chill at bay. With its touchable texture and natural tassels, it’ll look just as good rolled up and stored in a basket beside the couch as it will draped over the bed.

This blanket crafted for you by the skilled hands of Tivane or Temmy in Barrydale South Africa, using locally grown cotton.

*Please note that this product is made from a fluffy natural cotton yarn and is prone to pilling, which is not to everyone’s liking.

The maker
Barrydale Hand Weavers has been weaving textiles in the small Karoo town of Barrydale for decades, and has remained intentionally small. Since 2018, Kate and Arran Bastable have continued the weavery's legacy with a simple philosophy: honour the cloth, the process, and the people who make it.

Their journey began years before they owned the business, when they wrapped their firstborn child in a Barrydale blanket while visiting family in the town. When the opportunity arose to take over the weavery from founder Carol Morris, they left behind careers in Scotland and chose a different pace of life, relocating to South Africa with their three young children.

Today, every blanket, towel and table linen is woven by hand on traditional wooden looms using locally grown cotton. Nothing is hurried or machine finished. A napkin takes the time it takes. A blanket, longer. Every piece carries the subtle character of the person who made it, from slight variations in tension to the rhythm of each woven thread.

What we love most about Barrydale Hand Weavers is their belief that craftsmanship cannot be rushed, and how much they cherish their weavers. In a world of mass production, they continue to weave one piece at a time, preserving not only a centuries-old craft but also the livelihoods, knowledge and pride of the artisans behind it.
